Make Your Garden The Envy of the Neighborhood with Garden Irrigation

Make Your Garden The Envy of the Neighborhood with Garden Irrigation

Summer is coming—the season that requires you to put the most thought into your lawn care practices. If you are lax with your lawn, you could end up with brown, dead grass that will make you ashamed of the home you keep. But with the proper preparation, your lawn could be the finest on your block. Your yard could be the one all the neighbors look at as they pass by and think, I wish my lawn was so green! I wonder how they do it?

Making sure that the grass in your lawn—not to mention the plants in your garden—receives the water it needs can be one of the most exhausting chores a homeowner faces. But with a top-notch irrigation system, you can get the job done.

What is Irrigation?

Irrigation is a fancy term for watering your plants. Specifically, it refers to any system that modulates the amount of water that’s delivered to plants at a given time, so that plants get the water they need when they need it. Trusting to regular rainfall to grow your plants is not irrigation. Getting out there with a hose or a watering can, on the other hand, would be considered irrigation, because you are administering a controlled amount of water to your plants at a regular interval. Watering plants by hand like this is a fine way to keep them in good health if you want to devote the time and energy to it. But it isn’t the most efficient way to go about it.

Irrigation Techniques

There are several more advanced types of irrigation available to homeowners. Explore any one of the following:

  • Furrow irrigation involves creating a series of ditches and pouring water down them, allowing it to seep into and permeate the soil. This is a good way to cut the time you spend on hand watering down substantially.
  • Drip irrigation utilizes hoses with built in emitters to distribute water around the roots of your plants. Like furrow irrigation, this is a good system for gardens that are arranged in rows, but will work less well in lawns.
  • Soaker hoses are designed in a similar way to drip irrigation hoses, but rather than including emitters, the water is distributed via holes directly in the hoses.
  • Lawn sprinkler installation is possibly the best and most reliable way to distribute water evenly throughout a lawn without establishing rows or trenches the way one would in a garden setting.
